How environmental sustainability will affect Digital transformation and vice versa; the need to reskill from the Nigerian experience.

As the world grapples with the pressing challenges of climate change and technological advancements, exploring the interconnectedness of environmental sustainability and digital transformation becomes increasingly crucial. In Nigeria, this dynamic relationship holds significant implications for the nation’s future, necessitating a proactive approach to reskilling and ethical business operations. I explore some impact of environmental sustainability on digital transformation and vice versa, shedding light on the need for reskilling from the Nigerian experience.

Ensuring that future generations have resources to cater for themselves does not seem like a lofty goal as sustainability foretells because technological advancement is forcefully creating a make-or-break situation where businesses and people need to stay informed about technological advancements even though there is a lot of work to be done in the ethical operations of companies to reflect the ESG aspirations.

Embracing digital technologies can significantly impact environmental sustainability efforts, particularly in Nigeria, where the electricity situation has led to a heavy reliance on generators and the high fuel cost in recent times has made generator use very difficult. However, with the growing knowledge of solar energy changing from the perception that it is just for lightning bulbs, more and more households and businesses are finding solar panels and batteries a more cost-effective and environmentally friendly solution, albeit very slowly. The shift has increased the sale of solar panels in Nigeria despite the import duties and no local production of solar panels. As a result, the demand for generator repair services is decreasing, highlighting the need for upskilling and training in solar panel repair, installation, and services for those previously employed in the generator repair industry. As in the transition to solar energy, new roles in cyber security, data analysis and data science, design and simulation software, collaborative work and project management are a few functions that will increase as the sector grows.

The increasing adoption of digital technologies could revolutionize how business centers operate, a critical small and medium-scale business sector. With individuals now taking charge of their tasks and relying more on digital productivity tools and digital communication methods like emails instead of traditional hard copy letters, the demand for business centers is decreasing and, most recently, generative Artificial intelligence tools. Apart from this shift reducing the workload for individuals, there is less need for paper usage, contributing to environmental sustainability efforts by reducing paper waste. What does this mean for business center operators in reskilling business centers’ business strategy? This should be a point of reflection if you have used a business center in Nigeria.

The increasing adoption of digital technologies, such as e-commerce platforms and online ticket booking systems, is reshaping the business landscape in Nigeria. With individual trust levels increasing, more individuals are opting to shop online and book their transportation tickets digitally; there is a decrease in the demand for local vendors and the number of people involved in small-scale businesses. This transition streamlines the consumer process and reduces the pollution associated with crowded motor parks. The impact of digitalization on various sectors in Nigeria is vast. It continues to grow, significantly changing the skill set needed to conduct business and interact with its surroundings, including cloud computing, web design, and machine learning.

The interplay between environmental sustainability and digital transformation is ubiquitous in all sectors ( agriculture, health, business, etc.), and it presents challenges and opportunities for Nigeria. As the nation strives for a sustainable future, it must embrace the transformative power of digital technologies while ensuring responsible and ethical business practices. Reskilling becomes critical in navigating this evolving landscape, empowering individuals and organizations to leverage digital transformation to achieve environmental sustainability goals. By fostering a symbiotic relationship between these two domains, Nigeria can pave the way for a greener, digitally advanced future, ensuring the well-being of future generations.
