Free technology courses can open doors to new skills. The challenge is choosing a useful starting point and staying with it long enough to apply what you learn.

It is easy to register on several platforms, begin multiple courses and finish none. It is also possible to collect certificates without developing the ability to solve a problem or complete a practical task.

This guide introduces five established platforms offering free learning in cybersecurity, networking, cloud computing, artificial intelligence, programming and data. It also explains how to turn that learning into evidence of your ability.

Which platform should you choose? Start with your goal. You do not need an account on every platform. Area of interest Platforms to explore Starting point Cybersecurity Cisco or Fortinet Cybersecurity fundamentals Computer networking Cisco Networking Academy Networking basics and Packet Tracer Cloud computing AWS Educate or Microsoft Learn Cloud fundamentals Artificial intelligence IBM SkillsBuild or Microsoft Learn AI fundamentals; check prerequisites Data and analytics IBM SkillsBuild or Microsoft Learn Data fundamentals Low-code applications Microsoft Learn Power Platform fundamentals

1. Cisco Networking Academy Cisco Networking Academy offers a selection of free courses in cybersecurity, networking, Python programming, data science and other technology subjects. If you are exploring cybersecurity, Introduction to Cybersecurity provides a beginner-friendly introduction to threats, vulnerabilities and ways to protect digital systems. For networking, Cisco Packet Tracer lets you build and configure virtual networks without purchasing physical networking equipment. It gives you a practical way to explore how devices connect and communicate. Best suited to: beginners exploring cybersecurity, students learning networking and learners starting Python programming. Try a practical task: build a small virtual network in Packet Tracer and explain how its devices communicate.

2. AWS Educate AWS Educate provides free, self-paced learning and hands-on labs for people beginning their journey into cloud computing and AI. Its introductory courses cover storage, computing, networking, databases and cloud operations. A useful starting point is Getting Started with Storage, which introduces Amazon Simple Storage Service (Amazon S3) and includes practice with cloud storage and static website hosting. Learners as young as 13 can register using an email address, and no credit card is required. Selected courses also offer shareable digital badges. Best suited to: students, beginners and professionals exploring cloud-related careers. Try a practical task: complete the storage lab and document how you used Amazon S3. Use the provided training environment; check costs before creating resources in a separate personal AWS account.

3. IBM SkillsBuild IBM SkillsBuild offers free learning in AI, cybersecurity, data, cloud computing and workplace skills. Its combination of technical and career learning is useful for people who want to build subject knowledge alongside communication, problem-solving and professional readiness. Selected pathways lead to digital credentials that learners can share on their CVs, LinkedIn profiles and other professional platforms. Credential requirements vary and can include assessments or practical work. Choose the programme appropriate to your age and circumstances: IBM provides routes for adult learners, high school learners and university communities. Best suited to: learners exploring AI and data, people beginning a cybersecurity pathway and job seekers developing technical and workplace skills. Try a practical task: choose a relevant course or learning pathway, complete its required activities and write a short explanation of what you learned and how you could apply it.

4. Microsoft Learn Microsoft Learn provides free, self-paced modules and learning paths covering Azure, AI, cybersecurity, data, Microsoft 365 and the Power Platform. You can complete an individual module or follow a longer pathway connected to a technology or professional role. For learners with basic computing and Python knowledge, Get started with AI applications and agents on Azure currently contains seven modules. These introduce AI in Azure, generative AI and agents, text analysis, speech, computer vision, information extraction and knowledge retrieval. Check practical requirements before starting. The training content is free, but Azure practical exercises require access to an Azure subscription. Microsoft Learn sandboxes are no longer available. Charges may apply depending on the services used and the subscription’s allowances. Best suited to: learners exploring Microsoft technologies, AI and data, low-code applications or Microsoft certification pathways. Try a practical task: complete a relevant module and apply it through an exercise or small project, checking any account, licence or subscription requirements first.

5. Fortinet Training Institute The Fortinet Training Institute offers free self-paced cybersecurity lessons for beginners, IT professionals and experienced practitioners. Its library covers cybersecurity awareness, network security and more advanced topics. Free access covers self-paced lessons; on-demand hands-on labs and instructor-led training are paid options. Some certification examinations also carry separate fees. Best suited to: learners beginning cybersecurity, IT support professionals, network administrators and organisations seeking security-awareness learning. Try a practical task: use what you learn to prepare a basic security-awareness checklist for a school, workplace or small business.

Does free training mean free certification?

Not necessarily. Free access to learning materials does not automatically include a professional certification examination. Before enrolling, check whether the opportunity provides:

  • Free learning materials and assessments.
  • Practical labs or simulations.
  • A course-completion certificate or digital badge.
  • Preparation for a professional certification.
  • A certification examination, and whether it is free or paid. A course-completion badge is not the same as a professional certification. However, professional certifications can also be issued as digital badges. Check what the credential verifies and the assessment requirements behind it.

Turn learning into evidence Start with one clear objective and a realistic weekly study schedule. Choose a pathway that fits your current knowledge, device access and internet connectivity. Download materials for offline use where the provider permits it, and seek support when concepts become difficult. As you learn, create something that demonstrates your progress. Depending on your field, you could:

  • Build and configure a virtual network in Cisco Packet Tracer.
  • Host a simple webpage in a provider’s training lab, or use a personal cloud account after checking costs.
  • Document a basic cybersecurity risk assessment.
  • Create a data dashboard.
  • Develop a small Python application.
  • Build a simple low-code business solution.

Explain what you built, the problem it addresses and what you learned. Add suitable examples to your portfolio or LinkedIn profile, and link to them from your CV.

A completed project gives others something concrete to assess and gives you a useful foundation for your next step.
